Repairs to Nauset Bicycle Trail Underway on October 18; Partial Trail Closure

WELLFLEET, Mass – Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent Brian Carlstrom has announced that repairs to the Nauset Bicycle Trail in Eastham will be underway beginning Monday, October 18. During construction, the trail will be closed between the Salt Pond Visitor Center and the Doane Picnic Area. Riders may park at Doane Picnic Area to access the segment of trail to Coast Guard Beach, which will remain open.

Root heaves along the first 350 feet of the trail have caused unsafe riding conditions. Roots and asphalt will be removed, and a new asphalt section will be constructed. Root barriers will be installed along the new section to prevent future tree root concerns. This trail was last rehabilitated in 2013, at which time it was widened, curves were adjusted to improve safety, and new asphalt was laid down. The bike trails at Cape Cod National Seashore are among the first ever constructed in national parks.

“Our bike trails provide great opportunities for recreation, fitness, and to enjoy spectacular scenery,” said Carlstrom. “While there is never a good time to close a trail, it’s critical that we make these safety improvements. Late fall allows us to complete this work during a time of decreased visitation and before cold weather sets in and asphalt plants close.”

The contractor for this project is Edward Paige. Construction is anticipated to be complete in late November.
