The Town of Truro is currently working  with Dr. Skomal of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) and the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy to test pilot a real-time receiver at Head of the Meadow Beach. The receiver will send an email notification to town officials when a tagged shark swims within 500 yards of the receiver. Because of the remote setting of Head of the Meadow, there is no cell reception for lifeguards to receive notifications. Therefore, due to the Town’s inability to receive notifications via text messaging, the data is currently only being used for research purposes. At this time the Town is not using the real-time receiver as a tool to close swimming.
