Announcement of New Shellfish Regulations

October 13, 2015

The shellfish season is fast approaching with an anticipated opening date of November 1st in the Pamet Harbor Area. Shellfish and water samples will be collected on October 21st to be tested at the Division of Marine Fisheries lab located in New Bedford.

Please note some changes have been made to Truro’s Recreational shellfish licenses:

  • The annual recreational shellfish license is November 1st and ends October 31st;
  • The licenses are to be displayed in a clear plastic badge holder;
  • The annual fee is $15.00 for residents and $100.00 for non- residents;
  • The age requirement for a senior license has increased to 62 which is free and the senior license is to be renewed annually;
  • Lifetime licenses previously issued are grandfathered. If they cannot be displayed because they have been misplaced or lost you will be required to get an annual senior license;
  • In addition, for non-residents the option for a $25.00 weekly license will be available;
  • Licenses will be available at town hall beginning October 19, 2015.

The Pamet Harbor Area is classified as a Conditionally Approved Area with an opening date no earlier than November 1st, depending on test results which could delay the opening,and a closing date no later than April 30th. We typically close the area earlier to keep the shellfish stocks sustainable. The shellfish area along Cape Cod Bay is an Approved Area and can be accessed year-round. Typically the public will search for sea-clams and quahogs on extreme tides usually once a month. You are required to have a gauge in your possession and encouraged to have a copy of the Recreational Shellfish Regulations.
