Bike & Walkways Committee

Overview

The Bike and Walkway Committee is charged with the following tasks: to prepare a Bike and Walkway master plan and update as necessary for future biking and walking routes throughout Truro; to work with the Cape Cod National Seashore and National Park Service when necessary to plan and coordinate bike and walking trails in Truro; and to appoint one representative to serve on the Recreation Commission. The Bike and Walkway Committee goals are to provide safe areas for biking and walking, both seasonally and year-round, as they are an important means of local transportation, exercise, awareness, and mental wellbeing.

A Few Things to Note

  • The Town of Truro provides bike racks at all town beaches, Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) bus stops, and other public locations.
  • For your safety always wear a helmet. They are required for all cyclists under the age of 16.
  • You must ride on the right side of the road and obey all traffic laws, signs, and traffic lights.
  • Motorists must give a minimum 4 feet of space when passing bikers and walkers. It's Massachusetts law: Vulnerable Road Users Law.
  • The CCRTA accommodate bikes. During the summer, a bike shuttle operates between Marconi Beach in Wellfleet and Provincetown. It stops in Truro at Head of the Meadow Beach, Highland Road, and Truro Center. For more information, visit the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority website
  • The Head of the Meadow Bike Trail in North Truro runs from Coast Guard Road to Head of the Meadow Beach to High Head Road. For more information, view NPS Maps and Guidance.
  • To avoid biking on the highway, (from Castle Road to South Highland Road you cannot avoid Route 6), view the Google Maps directions.
  • The Claire Saltonstall Bikeway is a 135-mile bikeway that starts on the Charles River Bike Path in Boston and ends in Provincetown. The bikeway was named in memory of Claire Saltonstall, the daughter of Senator William L. Saltonstall. Claire was killed by an automobile in 1974 while she was riding her bicycle. Senator Saltonstall was a sponsor of bicycle safety legislation and was instrumental in developing the bikeway. The route was originally marked as Bike Route 1.
