Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Program

The Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) corridor is located on the bayside of Truro with access points at Beach Point Landing and Corn Hill Beach.

Travel is only allowed on town-owned property and vehicles must have a properly affixed ORV sticker in order to drive on the beach (see below for ORV requirements). All town-owned beaches require vehicles to have a properly affixed sticker starting on the third Saturday in June and extending through Labor Day, however, ORV stickers are required year-round.

Typically, ORV travel is permitted between the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. starting on the third Saturday in June through Labor Day. In the off-season, ORV access is open daily with a properly affixed ORV Beach Sticker.

How to Purchase an ORV Sticker:
Stickers can be purchased in person at the beach office or via the Town of Truro's Online Purchasing Portal - TownHall247 (stickers are not mailed and will need to be picked up at the beach office window).

Beach Office Hours:
*Please note seasonal hours of operation. The beach office is closed on federal holidays observed by the Town of Truro with the exception of June 19 (Juneteenth - Freedom Day) and July 4 (Independence Day).

Open: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. DAILY
Second Saturday in June through Labor Day
36 Shore Road, North Truro, MA 02652

In-Season: Third Saturday in June until Labor Day.
Off-Season: Everything in between the above timeframe.

Temporary Closures:
Due to shorebird nesting and coastal erosion, temporary closures are to be expected. Check the town's website for updates regarding open ORV areas.
  • Corn Hill Beach - OPEN EFFECTIVE 7/27/23. The ORV corridor runs approximately 365 feet to the right or to the north and 2,500 feet to the left or south as you enter the access point.
  • Beach Point Landing - OPEN EFFECTIVE 7/27/23. The ORV corridor runs approximately 440 feet to the left or to the south as you enter the access point.

ORV Rules & Regulations:
Not all vehicles are equipped to handle oversand driving - don't be that person who gets stuck in the sand...
(1) Only 4-Wheel Drive or All-Wheel Drive vehicles are permitted within the ORV corridor and must have a valid state registration, inspection sticker, insurance, and mandated accessory equipment. Please note: Most All-Wheel Drive vehicles are not recommended due to low clearance.
(2) Vehicles must possess the following required equipment while using the ORV corridor:
  • Shovel: Heavy-duty shovel equal to a military folding shovel.
  • Towing Device: Any of the following which are at least 14 feet long: Tow Strap: 1.5"; Rope: 3/4"; Chain 5/16"; Cable 1/4" with suitable attaching devices on both ends. Please note: A winch does not qualify as a towing device.
  • Jack: Standard size (e.g., vehicle manufacturer's jack)
  • Jack Support Board: Wood: 10" x 12" x 1.5" or Plywood: 10" x 12" x 3/4"
  • Tire Pressure Gauge: Must register to a PSI (pounds per square inch) of five or lower.
  • Spare Tire (must meet tire standards outlined below).
  • Tires: All five (5) tires, including the spare tire, must meet or exceed the standards outlined below. NOTE: Many newer vehicles are being produced with temporary spare tires, which do not meet our minimum safety requirements. Be sure to carefully check your spare tire size for compliance before applying for an ORV permit.

Other Recommendations for ORV Driving:
  • Tire pressure should be released to around 15 PSI. Be mindful that friction may cause pressure to increase while driving, making it necessary to stop and reduce pressure again. Your beginning tire pressure should not exceed 15 PSI.
  • Check the local tide charts prior to travel, as some areas may not be accessible during high tide. At no time will a vehicle drive or park on beach grass, coastal dunes, coastal embankment, marsh or shorebird nesting area.
  • Avoid driving through the surf. Salt water is extremely corrosive to vehicles. Seasoned ORV drivers will recommend hosing your vehicle off after traveling oversands.
  • ORV stickers are required year-round and must be permanently affixed to the driver’s side, front bumper of the vehicle to which it is registered (stickers are non-transferable). Stickers which are altered, defaced, copied or made unreadable are not valid.
  • Vehicle owners are responsible for filling in all ruts or holes and removing debris used to extricate the vehicle should you become stuck in the sand.
  • Dumping trash and other debris is prohibited. Bring in what you brought out and leave no trace behind.
  • Pedestrians and those who are sitting on the beach always have the right of way. When two vehicles meet on the beach, the operator of the vehicle with the water on the right has the right of way, those operating with the water on their left must pull over. Riding on fenders, tailgate, roof, or any exterior portion of a vehicle is prohibited.
  • Use caution at all times and adhere to the 15 mph speed limit.
  • NO ATVS.
  • Pets are prohibited on the beach during the hours of 9:00am - 6:00pm, 3rd Sat. of June through Labor Day. All pet waste must be disposed of properly. Pet waste dispensers and trashcans can be located at the entrance and exit of the beach. Please also note: Leaving pets in a hot vehicle may constitute criminal animal cruelty pursuant to Mass. General Laws Chapter 272 Section 77.
  • ORV sticker holders may not camp or sleep on the beach and parking areas.
  • Bonfires (beach fires) are only permitted with a valid permit - Truro Beach Fire Permits & Information

In submitting this application, I further acknowledge that violation by me of any of the above Rules & Regulations will result in the loss of sticker(s), a fine, or both. In submitting an ORV application, I further acknowledge that the purchase of an ORV Beach Sticker grants access to the ORV Corridor on beaches owned by the Town of Truro ONLY. The Town of Truro does not and cannot grant access to beach areas privately owned. Entry on private land may subject ORV drivers to claims of trespassing by the property owner(s).
