PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION

Strength Training

Fridays

9:00 am - 10:00 am

This class is unique in that they run their own group, with the instructor visiting 2 classes each month to answer questions, provide tips on form and modify exercises as needed. They perform the same simple, basic strength exercises for the upper and lower body at every session. There is a brief segment at the end which includes balance and stretching.

Ages served- Appropriate for any older adult (>60), Can serve the needs of younger participants who have significant medical issues, some younger and/or more fit individuals may find it repetitive or not challenging enough. Very frail individuals would be advised to start with Move and Stretch, as it’s less strenuous and provides more supervision.

Physical Requirements: Participants provide their own equipment (ankle weights and/or hand weights, elastic bands). Individuals should be able to transfer to and from chair independently and able to maintain standing balance for several minutes (with or without hand support).

Cost: Free

This is a hybrid class.

Chair Yoga

Wednesdays

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join Christine Frisco for Chair yoga. Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that can be done sitting on a chair or standing on the ground while using the chair for support. Wednesdays, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm.
Core & More

Thursdays

10:30 am - 11:30 am

This class provides safe core strength performed with a neutral spine, therefore, it is appropriate for people with osteoporosis, arthritis and joint replacements. Upper and lower body strength, balance and flexibility are also included. This class uses music and yoga inspired stretching. This class was not designed to be for women only, but seems to appeal more to them, there are 1 or 2 men who participate regularly.

Ages served- Designed for the “young seniors” (over 60), although some younger people participate.  This class is appropriate for people who have some prior exercise experience.

Physical Requirements- Participants should be comfortable exercising in sitting or standing. Mat work is optional- for those who wish to do it, they should be independent transferring on and off the floor. Equipment (theraband and mini-bands) is provided.
Men's Exercise

Wednesdays

10:30 am - 11:30 am

This class offers strength, balance, stretching, and posture exercises. Sport specific strength and conditioning can be provided on request. The format is geared toward the specific needs, learning styles, and exercise attitudes of men (in general, based upon research on the subject).  The class was conceived when we became aware that women were participating in exercise programs at 2-3 times the rate of men. One of the barriers to participation for some men was feeling awkward about entering an all female group.

Ages served: The workout is geared toward older adults (over 60), although might be appropriate for younger participants who have less exercise experience, or who have medical issues. Workout can be scaled to be appropriate for beginners or those with more experience and fitness.

Physical requirements: Class members should be comfortable performing exercise in sitting or standing and should be able to rise from a chair without assistance. Equipment (theraband, mini-bands and hand weights) is provided.

Move & Stretch

Thursdays

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

(60 minutes total with 5-10 minute break in the middle) This class evolved from the Arthritis Foundation “People with Arthritis Can Exercise/ PACE” program. The format includes gentle range of motion, posture, balance, stretching and education regarding pacing, joint conservation and body mechanics.

Ages served- Targeted for the “older seniors” (75 and up), although may be appropriate for younger participants who are new to exercise or who have significant mobility issues.

Physical requirements- Individuals should be able to sit without assistance and transfer to and from chair independently, although there have been people who come with a caregiver who can provide assistance. Standing exercises are optional- so there is no requirement for standing balance or time.

White Line Printmakers

Nordfeldt in 1916 and became known as the Provincetown Print.  The whole image is drawn on and printed from one woodblock rather than a series of blocks for each color change.  The popular method was practiced by many other artists through the years and continues to be popular today. Join Joan Rogers, Pat Canavari, or Cathy Skowron at the Truro COA and bring a new project or work on a print in progress!
